Heworth 12
Woolston 14
ROVERS recorded their third win on the trot in a well contested National Conference League Premier Division tie in York thanks to a brace of tries from full back Peter Livett and the accuracy of captain Graham Smith's boot.
But there was huge relief when Heworth second rower Jason Gatus missed a late conversion after the home side had pulled back from 14-2 down.
Rovers opened the scoring in the fourth minute when a delayed pass from stand off Nigel Quarmby found Livett linking in the line to outpace the cover and go over. Smith converted from the touchline and then added a penalty goal.
Heworth got on the scoreboard four minutes from half-time with a penalty goal.
Eight minutes into the second half Livett went over for his second try to give Rovers some breathing space. Smith had the easiest of conversions to put Rovers in the driving seat at 14-2.
Rovers suffered a couple of injuries that disrupted them slightly and that was when Heworth hit back with tries by Gatus and full back Andy Mercer.
The man of the match was Rovers hooker Mike Briggs. He was well supported by Peter Livett and Graham Smith.
Rovers: Peter Livett; Neil Hyde, Paul Fiddler, Karl Taylor, Dave Lomax; Nigel Quarmby, Graham Smith; Mark Shephard, Mike Briggs, Paul Foster, Liam Horrigan, Eddie Harris, Duane Millard. Subs: Andy Hill, Graham Muckalt, Stewart Cash.
Tomorrow, Saturday, Rovers travel to Oldham to take on Waterhead in the BNFL National Cup fourth round. The coach leaves the club at 11.45am for any supporters wishing to travel.
