THE GUARDIAN Cup quarter-finals produced some intriguing contests on Saturday.
Whiston Cross had to come from behind twice before they overcame Mid-Cheshire League outfit Warrington Borough 4-2.
Andrew Hayes led the way with a brace while Stephen Keogh chipped in with a penalty and Tony Holden came off the bench to clinch it.
Whiston will now entertain Sidac Social who booked their place with a 2-1 win at Padgate St. Oswalds.
Crosfields are also through after a goal in each half from their ace marksman Ian Pickett gave them a 2-0 win at Golborne Sports.
They will met East Leigh who overcame Premier Division outfit Halton Borough 3-1. Halton's consolation effort came from Kevin Martin.
Riverplate crushed Runcorn Albion 8-2 in the Drinkwater Trophy as Lance Johnson scored his first goal for the club. Joe Trainer and Dave Houghton also got on the score sheet but the major contributors were John McColl, who netted a treble and Ian Whitfield with a brace.
The Rylands Cup saw Halton Borough Reserves progress to the next round thanks to a 3-1 win over Moorfield Reserves. Peter Withers got two with Michael Higginson also netting.
St. Michaels are the dark horses in the championship race. With games in hand, they climbed to fifth by recording a 4-2 win at bottom of the table Winwick Utd. A treble was struck by Anthony Mullarkey while Steve McKeown bagged the other.
The big shock in Division One saw Moore Utd win 2-0 at leaders Owens Corning and demolish their proud 100 per cent record. Sharpshooter Scott Taylor claimed both the goals.
In another top of the table clash, a second half strike from Fearnhead's Mike Holden gave them a 1-1 draw at Haydock.
Runcorn Villa extended their lead to eight points in Division Two as they saw off bottom club Village 4-1.
Lockers enjoyed a 3-1 win at Travellers Rest due to a brace from evergreen Tony Darbyshire and a tap in by Neil Egerton.
Penketh Utd were 2-0 down with only 12 minutes left at Three Crowns before Graham Elliott, Steve Illingworth and Stuart Cunliffe secured a 3-2 win.
Division Three leaders Crontonians won 7-0 at the expense of St. Benedicts. Leading the cavalry charge was Lee Holmes, who snatched four, while there was one apiece from Carl Sherlock, Simon Williamson and Phil McGee.
The reserve sections saw Eagle grab a late winner courtesy of Paul Packer to overcome St. Michael 1-0.
Crosfields' Tom Milow was in good form as he rattled in a hat-trick which included a spectacular 35 yarder in his team's 5-2 success over Golborne. Peter Reid and Wayne Green were also on the goal trail.
A David Pike double and one each from Neil Williamson and Mark Taylor gave division three leaders Irlam Catholic Club a 4-1 win at Lymm Rangers.
Fearnhead strolled to a 5-2 win against Three Crowns thanks to a Dave Spence hat-trick supported by strikes from Carl Burton and Phil Dean.
Chris Filkins and Peter Jones were on target for Halton Borough third but it mattered not as they lost 3-2 at Halebank.
The Lancs under 18s Inter League final between Warrington and Preston, will take place on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm, at Leyland Motors. The coach will leave St. Albans FC, Bewsey Road, at 6pm.
