CRUEL thieves broke into the Help the Aged charity shop in Stockton Heath, stealing just two pounds.
Last Wednesday evening the callous intruders forced a window at the back of the shop with a screwdriver, only to leave virtually empty-handed save for a collection box.
The stricken shop was first raided only four months ago when a window was smashed and £40 was lifted from the float. The bungling burglars cut themselves as they climbed in, leaving blood on broken glass at the scene. Shop assistant, Jean Hoare said: "We volunteer our services and work very hard to raise money so that old folks can live independently and with some dignity. I just can't understand what kind of despicable person would do this."
Mrs Hoare added that the costs of continually replacing windows was tying up valuable funds which should be used for a better purpose. She said: "This time it will cost around £50 and the last break-in was also very expensive as we had to put in a specially strengthened window."
Stockton Heath police are investigating whether there is a link between the burglaries and will compare forensic evidence from both crime scenes. A spokesman said: "We hope to enlist the help of GUARDIAN readers and urge them to come forward with any information which will be dealt with in the strictest confidence."
