A PILOT scheme to help fire-hit families will be launched by Warrington Red Cross in May.

The Fire Victim Support Service will offer practical and emotional help to anyone caught up in the trauma of a major blaze at their home.

Red Cross volunteers will be on call to respond with a specially adapted vehicle equipped with a shower, clothing, and emergency supplies such as baby food. The scheme is to be road-tested in Warrington and later extended throughout Cheshire.

A Red Cross spokeswoman said: "The fire brigade are marvellous but they have to go on to fight the next fire and they just don't have the time to spend looking after the people affected.

"For instance, if your house is destroyed or badly damaged, you might be able to wait for a meal but a baby can't. Often people are dirty and smoky and they might have lost all their clothing. We can offer them the chance to have a shower and freshen up."

She added: "People who lose everything in a house fire can find themselves suddenly homeless. We can help them find somehere to stay for the night - and if necessary, give them a lift there!"
