STAFF at Warrington Community Health Care NHS Trust are urging people to "Take The Plunge" and give up smoking on National No Smoking Day.
The Trust is running a competition and prizes include a 12 month peak pass for Future Fitness Health Centres and a family day out at a Golden Gates Leisure Centre, followed by a meal. Anyone trying to give up can also claim 10 free swimming sessions.
John Gartside, chairman of Warrington Community Health Trust, says almost everyone knows someone who has been seriously ill due to smoking.
He said: "Giving up is the single most important thing people can do to improve their health.
"We accept that it is very difficult to give up which is why we've devised a scheme where people can receive help rather than be preached at."
Sally Farrer, a specialist from the North Cheshire Health Promotion Service, says anyone who is thinking about kicking the habit should contact their GP straight away to see what schemes are available. Some patients who show a commitment to giving up smoking may even receive free nicotine patches.
She added: "Every practice will be offering advice and support on giving up smoking, and some practices will be giving even more help."
John D'Arcy, Director of the National Pharmaceutical Association, agrees. He said: "Giving up is not easy - so professional advice on nicotine replacement products from your pharmacist could make all the difference."
British research shows that quitting at any age increases life expectancy and and those who stop before the age of 25 have a life expectancy similar to that of a non-smoker.
