TWO Newton primary schools are set to share in a £1 million cash boost to fund extra teachers and classrooms.

Newton County Primary and St Peter's CE Primary are to receive additional funding over the next three years to help meet the government's pledge to reduce infant class sizes.

Education chiefs at St Helens Borough Council say they are committed to reducing class sizes in Newton to no more than 30 pupils by the academic year 2000/2001.

Education Chairman John Fletcher said: "This extra funding will help raise the already high standards achieved by our schools. The schools benefiting from this initiative have been involved in extensive consultation to ensure that the target will be met."

But a council spokesperson said Education bosses did not yet know how many extra teachers or how much more classroom space the schools would receive.
