Halton Hornets u14s 40
Wigan St Patrick's u14s 6
NORMAL service was resumed in this emphatic victory after a couple of sub-standard performances recently.
Hornets clicked into gear straight away and opened the scoring when Liam McGovern forced his way over for a try that he also converted for a 6-0 lead.
After a couple of near misses Hornets increased the lead when on the last tackle quick thinking by McGovern saw him go blind and dive in at the corner for an unconverted score.
St Pat's fought back and got a converted try to put themselves back in the game at 10-6.
But Hornets hit straight back with winger Darren Burgess brilliantly fielding a McGovern cross-kick on the run to score wide out.
This was superbly converted by Ste Rowlands for a 16-6 half-time lead.
St Pat's had early second-half pressure on the Hornets line and another score would have put them back in the game.
But a wild pass was picked up by David Prescott who shrugged off a couple of tacklers before sprinting virtually the length of the pitch for the try which finally killed St Pat's resistance.
He had had an earlier effort disallowed for a double movement.
The conversion by Rowlands made it 22-6.
Another long distance try came from Mike McDonald who burst through and used his pace to go 75 metres, easily rounding the full-back to take the score to 26-6.
Hornets were now playing some fluent rugby and fine handling sent David Allen surging through a gap to score in the corner.
Almost a carbon copy of the last try followed with David Allen again storming through another hole created by lovely Hornets play for a try converted by McGovern.
More great play sent prop Sean Loftus, who was having his best game of the season, romping in from halfway to take the final score to 40-6.
With the BARLA Lancs Cup Final coming up in a fortnights time, Hornets are hitting their straps again.
