Old Anselmians 34
Helsby 1st XV 10
HELSBY went out in the quarter-finals of the Cheshire Cup against opposition from two divisions higher.
Although the scoreline did not reflect the true outcome of the game, Helsby looked like they were going to come back at the home side when captain John Williams pulled a try back which was converted by Phil Catterall who later added a penalty to narrow the score to 22-10.
Unfortunately Helsby were reduced to 14 players when they had a man sent off leaving them to struggle on allowing the home team to go on and win the match with two late tries.
Merseyside Police 22
Helsby 2nd XV 7
HELSBY seconds were hit by injury problems and just about managed to put out a side.
They tested the home side in the first-half putting them under pressure but just could not find a way through.
Silly mistakes by Helsby gifted the police their tries before Helsby made a real fight of it and some good play resulted in Mark Wakefield pulling a try back for the visitors, Paul Ryder converting.
Helsby lifted themselves following this and could have had further points when forward Martin Lewis and Mark Blake were stopped just short of the line with some powerful runs.
