A WINSFORD taxi driver prevented a potentially horrific distaster when he rushed to the aid of a man whose car was ablaze in a petrol station.
Taxi driver Robert Eaton was driving along the Wharton by-pass from the direction of Town Bridge, last Saturday evening, on his way to pick up a fare, when he saw a car on fire in the forecourt of Morrisons filling station.
Robert, who works for Winsford Taxis, had a fire extinguisher in his cab and stopped his car and went to help put out the fire.
He said: "When I got to the scene I saw that a blue Volvo was on fire. Flames were coming out of the bonnet and from underneath the car as well.
"I couldn't believe that people were still filling up their cars with fuel as I was putting out the flames.
"The staff at the station were nowhere to be seen and when they finally came out of the station shop they said they had not seen the fire.
"A fire is the most dangerous thing that can happen in a petrol station and I think the staff at the petrol station should have been the first ones on the scene.
"I believe that the staff there should be specially trained to deal with a situation like the one on Saturday."
Morrisons management said their petrol station staff had received full internal training, but refused to comment further on the incident, in which no-one was injured.
