Since 1992, 69,000 tins of steak and 6,000 packs of butter, worth approximately £75,000, have been distributed to specified groups by the borough council.
We are one of very few councils in the north west who apply for this surplus food from the intervention board. I feel that we have an obligation to residents to receive and distribute this food to people who qualify. This policy is fully supported by members and officers of the council.
There are other groups that we would like to help if we could, but the eligibility rules are very strict and we have to ensure that we comply. Each year audit checks take place to ensure that the guidelines are adhered to.
There are always a small number of residents who are unhappy with the criteria but unfortunately the matter is not within our control. If it was I am sure that we would distribute it to more people.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the distribution to residents, the volunteer helpers, Vale Royal staff and centre management groups for a job well done.
I hope this explanation of the council's policy on surplus EC food is understood by the community.
