TATTON'S Labour group has responded with caution to the news of the Tory nominations.
Some Labour councillors feel a return to Tory control could be inevitable if - or when - Martin Bell steps down.
Clr Bill Davies said: "This was once the fifth safest Tory seat in the country, and it may just revert to that.
"I'm not surprised that the Tories have begun their selection process this early. It's not something the Labour Party is going to do for some time, a year at least."
Clr Davies added that he was dismayed at Mr Bell's confirmation that he will not stand again.
"I personally believe he should, and would be delighted if he did," he added.
"I have explained to him my view that circumstances change, and he would not be betraying his morals by standing again. But he is adamant, and I respect that."
