Rossendale RUFC 8
Warrington RUFC 33
AFTER Warrington Rugby Union side maintained their push for promotion with a comfortable victory at Rossendale on Saturday their attentions are switched to the Lancashire Trophy.
On Sunday Warrington entertain Wigan in the semi-finals at Bridge Lane, Appleton, kick-off 2.30pm.
Warrington are hoping it will be third time lucky as they have twice lost at this stage in the last five years.
Wigan have had a tremendous season, losing only one league game to Warrington 20-19 three weeks ago, and games between the two sides are always combative and fiercely contested.
Warrington will have to conduct late fitness tests on scrum half Gez Louden and wing Lee Rushton while prop Stewart Edwards could well be in contention after missing the last two games.
Warrington's promotion rivals Workington and Wigan won their league games easily at the weekend too so it looks very much as if the two places will not be decided until the final game of the season.
Warrington had their game sewn up by half-time when they led 26-0.
It was the scintillating form of the backs which proved to be the difference.
Man of the match Andy James provided a series of long balls out wide and it was no surprise when left wing Andy Higginson raced over.
James slotted three penalty goals, two were enormous kicks from the half way line, as Warrington raced ahead.
Captain Jim Keulemans, playing in his best game this season, scored two tries after two excellent passes from Kellett and James.
With the wind at their backs in the second half Rossendale kicked an early penalty goal but Warrington killed the game after a strong run by Peter Holce was finished off by Shaun Geritas.
