RESIDENTS and town councillors have won their fight to defeat plans for a complex of flats in Alsager.
Gladman Homes hoped to win planning approval for 32 one-bedroomed flats on land off Station Road.
Two schemes submitted by the developer were rejected by Congleton Borough Council as being overintensive.
Gladman appealed against the second refusal, but the appeal was dismissed by a government planning inspector last summer.
Gladman subsequently revised the scheme by moving the position of a planned 48-space car park, but the latest proposals were turned down by councillors because they represented an overintensive use of the site.
Residents claimed their homes would be overlooked by the 4 blocks of flats, and traffic congestion in Station Road would increase.
Alsager town councillors agreed it would be too intensive to build 32 flats on the site, while echoing residents' concerns over increased traffic.
Proposed road changes to Station Road would affect the character of one of the older parts of Alsager, they added, changes which would take away a valuable stretch of on-street parking along Station Road.
Councillors went against planning chief Geoff Allen in rejecting the scheme, with Mr Allen recommending approval.
