Merseyside Police 1st XV 27 Helsby 1st XV 26

DUE to several first-team key players missing, several second team men had to be called upon and gave an outstanding performance against a side from a higher division.

Matty Owen made an excellent debut but it was Bobby Merrill who produced an all round superb display scoring two tries.

The first gave Helsby the lead when he backed up a break by Mark Wakefield to touch down under the posts, Phil Catterall converted the second when he caught an interception and raced 25 yards to score.

Helsby built up a 19-10 half-time lead when Andy Rowlinson added a try which Phil Catterall converted.

Merseyside Police came out a stronger side in the second-half using their experience to build up an eight point lead before Andy Rowlinson scored his second try of the game to race in for a 60 yard try which Phil Catterall converted. Aston Dane mom, Bob Merrill.

Helsby seconds went down 56-0 to a very strong and experienced West Park St Helens third side. Although there were some good individual performances by centre Matt Cunningham and flanker Clive Cottiga.
