Workmen will then move in to drain the pool and replace the 25-year-old old tiles.

The pool, which will take four days to drain, was last emptied five years ago.

The pool - part of the Knutsford Leisure Centre complex - was officially opened to the public in April 1975 by the then manager Ray Riddell.

But first to use it - in September 1974 - were youngsters from neighbouring schools, including Knutsford High, which is still connected to the centre.

"I think it was one of the first joint use leisure centres in Cheshire," said current manager Mike Harding on Friday.

The centre was built with the blessing of Cheshire County Council and Knutsford Urban District Council to provide sports facilities for pupils and residents.

That agreement - signed 25 year ago - is still in use today.

During school term, the pool is open to the public for one hour only at lunchtime and after school.

"It was a new concept and a very exciting time when the centre opened," said Mr Harding.

Ollerton councillor Doug Page was a member of the urban district council when the idea of a dual-use leisure centre first surfaced.

"Knutsford had for many years wanted a swimming pool and eventually this opportunity came about," he said.

"There were a few people not happy because it backed up to their homes in Cranford Avenue, but we thought it must be a good thing if you can save a life by teaching a child to swim." Today, the centre is thriving. Last year 54,000 passed through its doors.

"We still seek to provide recreational opportunities for everyone in Knutsford," said Mr Harding.
