PEOPLE jetting off for two weeks in the sun or a wet weekend in Windermere are being targeted by police in a bid to cut the number of burglaries in the town.

More than 1,100 burglaries were committed in Warrington during 1998, with four out of five happening when the home or property is empty.

Now Crime Prevention officers in the town have published a leaflet and a list of guidelines to make sure holidaymakers' dreams don't turn into nightmares when they get back.

The leaflet will also be available in travel agents so that travellers can get their security as well as their suitcase sorted for the trip.

Detective Inspector David Blood said: "The burglary rate in Warrington is low, however we cannot be complacent and would ask any one who is going away to follow the advice in the leaflet.

"The main aim is to create an atmosphere that makes the home looked lived in whilst your away because this will deter burglars," he said.

Other suggested advice is remember to cancel deliveries such as papers and milk, use time switches to activate lights and appliances to fool people that someone's in and make sure valuables are well hidden or stored with a friend.

Contacting neighbours and your area's Home Watch co-ordinator so that they can keep a special eye on your home is another tip.

Added DI Blood: "We value the community's contribution to tackling crime. They should contact us immediately when see something suspicious especially if neighbours are away."
