WINSFORD'S Meals on Wheels service is desperate for more volunteers.

Organisers fear the scheme could be run by an independent company if more helpers don't come forward.

"It's not just food we provide, it's a caring service," said Shirley Norville, of the Women's Royal Voluntary Service.

"We don't just hand the meal over and go. If someone doesn't answer the door we report back to social services and people check. We provide the care that nobody else would."

Drivers and helpers currently deliver meals to housebound from their base at Elmhurst Residential home.

Volunteers give up two hours once every month and a vehicle is provided if needed.

"We're not looking to go out of business and are looking for more volunteers. We would bend over backwards to keep doing the service," added Mrs Norville.

If you want to volunteer, ring Bridget Walker on 01606 551046 or Ernest Cruddace on 01606 559199.
