Estate staff snapped up the 16th century barn and transported it brick by brick and beam by beam to Knutsford 22 years ago.

It arrived in January 1977 and took 14 months to rebuild in the park's then newly-planned medieval village close to the Old Hall.

The project - undertaken through the Government's Job Creation Scheme - cost £13,000. Early jobs included laying the foundations and adding a new thatched roof.

The barn had originally been used to store grain, but at Tatton it took on a new role in the medieval village, where even today it still houses building materials from years gone by.
