Changes proposed for the city's unitary plan include turning the airport into a 'major developed site'.

Protesters fear that would give the airport sweeping powers to build within its boundaries - without the need for public inquiries or normal planning checks.

"People in Knutsford and Mobberley might just be alerted to the fact that Manchester Airport's appetite has yet to be quenched," said Clr Tony Greaves.

"Manchester City Council is the majority shareholder of Manchester Airport and it now becomes its own planning authority."

But yesterday (Tuesday) an airport spokesman insisted the change simply brought the airport in line with other big green belt developments such as power stations and hospitals.

"Macclesfield already recognise us as being such a site," said the spokesman. "And Manchester will be looking to recognise us in the same way - it's nothing to do with planning permission."

But Macclesfield, whose officers were unavailable for comment yesterday, are believed to be opposed to the move.

Cheshire and Macclesfield's responses must be submitted by the end of this month.
