THE HEART of the Community lives on! That was the message atop an iced cake made for the last playgroup session at the Moathouse Neighbourhood Centre.
The activity base has been at the hub of life on the decimated estate for 20 years.
Moathouse homes were declared unfit after checks revealed corrosion in building materials. Most families have now been rehoused.
"There are only a few left. The estate is pretty well deserted and it's sad to see all the boarded up homes. Now it's time to leave the centre so it really is the end of an era," said founder and organiser Olwyn Bottomley.
In a bid to keep the community in touch a new community centre is being established in a shop unit in Beech Drive.
Some activities, including the playgroup will get underway again in September and Olwyn and the organising team are hoping to gain the unit next door to make more room.
