MARK FRASER triumphed in Widnes Golf Club's blue riband event at the weekend, the five handicapper taking the Captain's Prize in a desperately close finish against Frank Whitfield.

Whitfield had set a daunting halfway pace on Saturday, going round the Highfield Road course in a blistering 61, eight under the par of 69 off his handicap of 10 to lead by four strokes.

Fraser was well down the field on Saturday, posting a standard scratch score of 68 of his testing handicap.

On Sunday he was in devastating form though and produced a brilliant 63 under tremendous pressure to set a superb target of 131.

Whitfield, going out at the back of the field, could only produce a 70 for the same aggregate and under the rules of the competition lost the principal prize of the year donated by club captain Fred Mansley, on an inferior second 18.

Third place went to Steve Fletcher who added Sunday's second best score of 64 to his opening 69 to finish two shots off the pace, one ahead of Bob O'Callaghan and George Cox.

O'Callaghan's efforts earned him the Senior's prize while Cox received the Saturday award for the best round outside the main prizewinners.

The Sunday consolation prize went to Roy Adams for a 64, while the lowest gross honours, which would have been won by Fraser went to Greg Johnson.
