Widnes Recs Second XI v Moorfield Second XI

THIS was a must win for Recs as they are now one point behind Euxton with two games left although it wasn't an easy win.

Moorfield fielded no less than five youngsters who looked full of potential, but it was their experienced players, Dave Sefton and Jed McCann, who put in fine performances with bat and ball backed up by G Jones and veteran John Brophy.

After winning the toss Moorfield put Recs into bat and Jimmy Ashall and Freeman got Recs off to a solid start.

Freeman out for 15 bowled McCann and Ashall 23 caught Naughton bowled Brophy.

Beddingfield dug in and was eventually caught and bowled for 13 off Eddie Owen, the score on 56 for five but in came Alan Magee 16 and Phil Dale 19 both out to Sefton.

Chopper Stanley then hit a quick eight not out and Widnes reached 116 all out.

Tony Poole's side got off to a good start when Phil Dale bowled Paton for one and the tone was set.

A fired-up Poole then took two more wickets thanks to Magee and Morris and Phil Dale then had Sefton lbw for 12.

Ged McCann hit a fine 15 before a wicked ball from the superb Dale hit his middle stump, Bri Cafferty then chipped in with his usual three wickets and Moorfield were all out for 75.

Phil Dale 16-3-40-4, Tony Poole 9-2-23-3 and Cafferty 6-1-1-12-3, the pick of the bowlers.

This local derby was played in a fine spirit and was a credit to both Widnes sides.
