HALTON youngsters were praised for their spirit and determination when they were awarded the Fair play Award Trophy in the first ever Cheshire Youth Games that took place in Macclesfield on Saturday, July 3.

More than 130 children and 30 team managers, parents and coaches left Halton early on Saturday morning to take part in the inaugural Youth Games that involved eight other Boroughs.

The Halton Team, made up of children aged between 11-13, was bursting with energy during the opening ceremony and even though the weather in the morning was damp and dismal the squads remained enthusiastic for their events.

Halton's Mayor and Mayoress Cllr Bob and Mrs Sheelah Gilligan attended the opening ceremony then toured the Games chating to the competitors from the Borough.

They then watched two closely fought Rugby semi-finals where Halton was narrowly beaten by one point in the final seconds

Halton Football Team for pupils with severe learning disabilities came joint first with Crewe and Nantwich in their tournament and received Halton's only Gold Medal of the Games.

The closing ceremony for many was the highlight of the day when all the children received their Bronze medal for taking part in the event from the Mayor of Halton.

They were then congratulated for the spirit and personality of their Team and were presented with the Fair Play Award Trophy
