NOBODY wants a roundabout in Middlewich, Congleton Borough Council officers have discovered.

They have been sent round the bend trying to interest the town's firms in sponsoring Middlewich traffic islands.

Although companies have come forward to adopt roundabouts in Congleton and Sandbach, Middlewich has been left out in the cold.

Peter Van Schijindel, landscape services manager at Congleton Borough Council, said: "I do not honestly know why firms have rejected the chance to come forward and sponsor traffic islands in Middlewich. It's a shame.

"It can't be because they haven't heard about the scheme. After all, we advertised in the papers and contacted employers in Middlewich by letter."

He explained: "We are still encouraging companies that may be interested to come forward. The cost of sponsoring a traffic island is £1,000 a year for a minimum of three years. A sign can then be displayed on the roundabout, advertising the firm."

Mr Van Schijindel added: "If we are really struggling to find sponsors, we may consider allowing firms to sponsor traffic islands for a shorter period."
