WHEN Winsford 2nd XI met Waveform in the first game of the season, they came out on top showing plenty of promise for the coming year.

However, it was Saturday's visitors who have since fulfilled their potential, reaching the semi-final of the cup and coming to Knights Grange second in the Meller Braggins 2nd XI League.

But thanks mainly to former Weaverham bowler Ken Fitzpatrick's 6-27, Winsford again proved too strong for their Northwich neighbours.

After putting the visitors into bat, some enthusiastic fielding in the scorching weather restricted Weaverham to 70 for 9.

The arrival of the youthful Colin Miveld repaired some damage, as he shared a last-wicket stand of 37 with another junior, Roberts.

Winsford openers arrived at the crease chasing 108, but their stay was short-lived as Martin Barrett was caught out.

This wicket brought skipper Barraclough who, along with Richard Evers, moved the score forward before departing for 28.

John Morgan was the new batsman and things got better and better as he and Evers took the score on to 93 before the latter's dismissal.

The winning run was a wide, denying Winsford the chance to pick up an extra batting point. Morgan finished not out on 41, with Brian Smith on four.

This Saturday, the 2nd XI travel to Mere.
