DELAMERE Primary is proof that small is beautiful.

With just 54 pupils, it's one of the smallest schools in the country.

But that hasn't stopped government inspectors marking it out for special praise.

Their report said there is no evidence that pupils in small schools suffer - and said the quality of teaching at Delamere proves it.

It reads: "Teachers are committed to improving their performance and have given a great deal of time to extra training in subjects and areas such as special educational needs. The school has benefited substantially from this."

Head teacher Penny Luker was delighted by the comments.

She said: "I think it's a very good school and it's nice when a small school is mentioned.

"We have a really lovely set-up, the church is very supportive and parents raise a lot of money.

"We also have very strong links with the community. Old people come here and have lunch with us once a month," she added.
