HIGH jumper Claire Wright is over the moon.

The 15-year-old Weaverham pupil earned a bronze medal at the National Schools Championships in Bury St Edmonds this weekend - and then received an England call up.

Claire, who also represents Vale Royal AC, jumped 1 metre 67 centimetres to achieve a memorable bronze.

She actually equalled the silver medalist's jump but lost out on the medal through a countback decision.

The winning jump - 1m 70cms - was below Claire's personal best height of 1.73cms, but proud dad Dave says she was delighted with the performance.

"There were some extremely good athletes there so it was a good result," he said.

"The day was made even better when she found out that she would be representing England in the home internationals event next weekend.

"She's worked really hard to get this far and this is the best stage to compete on."

The Delamere jumper will compete against the best from around the British Isles at Camarthen this weekend.

Added Dave: "Everyone is extremely proud of Claire and what she's achieved."

Northwich sprinter Leonie Lightfoot also put in an excellent display with a bronze medal in the girls 100m.

The Sir John Deane's student and City of Stoke runner clocked a time of 12.5 seconds to take third place.

Leonie, 17, of London Road, was delighted with her podium finish. She said: "I was really pleased to have made the final so to get a bronze medal was even better.

"The time wasn't that fast because there was a strong head wind but it was enough."
