THE DETERMINATION of Sir John Deane's rower Paul Houlston has paid off - thanks to his gran!

The 18-year-old student has been called up to the Welsh squad for the Under 18 home international in Cork later this month.

He qualified for the Quad Four boat thanks to gran Catherine, but admits that he doesn't even know whe she's from.

Paul said: "It was a bit of a fluke but I'm delighted to have been chosen. I'm not even too sure where in Wales she's actually from. I just got a phone call asking me to row and I gladly accepted the offer."

Paul started rowing less than two years ago.

Coach Richard Lowrie said: "Paul always works very hard and it's been a very determined effort from him to get where he is now.

"Whatever the weather Paul would be out training when other rowers wouldn't even consider it. He's done exceptionally well."
