POLICE are hunting robbers who struck at a convenience store - terrifying two women and stealing £4,000.

Staff had been counting up takings when the raiders walked into Heald's Day and Nite store, Northwich Road, Weaverham, last Sunday afternoon.

They demanded cash and threatened the two women shop assistants before shutting them in a security room and making their get-away.

A short time later an elderly couple were driving along Sandy Lane, in Weaverham, when their car was hit by a black saloon which failed to stop.

Police later recovered a black Vauxhall Belmont from a wooded area near to Cogshall Lane, in Comberbach. They believe this was the car used in the robbery.

DS Steve Holliwell, of Northwich police, appealed for witnesses.

"These are dangerous men and must be caught. The women were extremely shaken up," he said.

"We are appealing for anyone who has seen anything suspicious in the last few days or maybe saw the Vauxhall Belmont." The first robber is a white male, in his late 20s, 5ft 5ins tall, of sturdy build with broad shoulders. He had dark brown hair with a fringe and was wearing a blue and green short sleeved shirt.

The second man is white, in his late 20s, 5ft 7ins tall with light brown shaved hair with a tanned complexion possibly wearing shorts.

Graham Walker, from Heald's, confirmed the robbery and added: "Fortunately the two members of staff were not hurt."
