For the amazing course of true love against all the odds has ended in yet another heartbreak for Leycester the peacock.

His mate Mallory and their four newly-hatched chicks have left their Mobberley love nest - leaving the forlorn fowl miserable and residents with yet more sleepless nights.

"Although I have been so angry with him for lack of sleep I feel sorry for him now," said Wenda Page, of Edenfield Road, Mobberley.

"He sounds so sad and upset."

No one was available at Leycester House, where Mallory has lived for years, to explain why or where his mate had gone, but it's believed she is now living with other peacocks.

Only Mallory has been left alone - and he is noisier than ever.

In the year since he left a Smith Lane farm for Edenfield Road, after the death of his original mate, the forlorn fowl had become the Don Juan of the rooftops in his attempts to woo Mallory.

Despite a certain amount of reluctance on the part of his would-be mate, the couple produced four eggs which never hatched.

But success the second time around has been little consolation for the now lonely bird - nor for long-suffering residents.

"He is making a terrible noise now," Mrs Page said. "You can't give a peacock a set of directions - I want him to go to a place where he can be happy."
