AS a resident of Winwick I would like to take issue with the rubbish printed in last week's GUARDIAN under Letter from the House by Helen Southworth MP.

According to Mrs Southworth her Government's policy is "to protect our countryside... to use land carefully and recycle brownfield sites so that we have no need to cut huge slices of our countryside for new houses... the wholesale destruction of our countryside has got to stop."

Try telling that to the people of Winwick who have just been told that one of her Government's inspectors has given the go-ahead to build 41 houses on meadowland teeming with wildlife to the east of Golborne road.

This follows on the loss of another field to the B and Q Superstore, 300 houses on the old Winwick hospital site, a lodge on lawns to the rear of the Swan pub and a revised bid for a motorway service station, complete with lodge of course, on fields close to the M6.

Further comment on this subject from Mrs Southworth would be of interest.
