YOUNG Warrington anglers celebrated unprecedented success at the most important competition of the year.

Members of Warrington Anglers' Association swept the board at the National Cadets, Juniors and Intermedates Championships in a medals haul which put all previous successes in the shade.

Nearly 600 anglers took to the Bridgewater Canal on Saturday and Warrington came away with two individual golds, a team gold and two team silvers.

Andrew Lewis stood head and shoulders above the rest of the cadet field with a haul of 2kg 430g, while teammates Dale Lownds and Neil Jones also made the top five to take Warrington to the team gold.

In the junior section Andrew Baker continued the success by finishing top of the individual competition with 3kg 900g to help his team to second place.

Mark Bibby's fourth place was the closest for Warrington in the intermediates individuals and they only narrowly lost out on team gold, finishing two points behind Farnborough.

Warrington secretary Frank Lythgoe said: "We won't have been favourites going into the competition but to take medals in every category was a stunning effort."
