REFUSE giant UK Waste has applied to extend the Risley Landfill Site.

The application has been submitted to Warrington Borough Council and will now undergo a consultation process before development control committee members make a decision.

As the GUARDIAN went to press, detailed plans of the application were not available to the public, but a spokesman for UK Waste said the proposed 25 hectare extension will use land at the north of the existing site.

Site traffic will continue to use the access road off junction 11 of the M62 and the site will be enclosed on the Culcheth side by a five metre high screen, leaving the existing flora and fauna intact.

Sam Dewsnap, UK Waste's technical director, said: "While recycling and reducing the amount of waste we produce are the best solutions, we have to accept that this only goes some way to resolving the growing waste problem."

The company is holding an open evening at Risley Landfill Facility on Thursday, July 22 from 4.30pm where experts will be on hand to answer any questions.

The plans will also be on display at Culcheth Library from Friday, July 23, from three weeks.
