WARRINGTON Borough Council's traffic island sponsorship scheme has generated more than £112,000 in just two years, it was announced this week.

More than half of the town's 77 roundabouts now have sponsorship deals and the largest of these was recently agreed between the council and BMW dealership Halliwell Jones.

This deal involves a four year £36,000 sponsorship package for landscape enhancement and maintenance for both Bevan Island and Fordton Island.

Other improvements around the town have included the planting of ornamental trees, shrubs and colourful bedding plants during the spring and summer.

Leader of the borough council John Gartside said: "We are delighted with the sponsorship deals which are mutually beneficial for the council and sponsors.

"It establishes new partnerships, resulting in a higher standard of maintenance for the benefit of the environment and the community."

Halliwell Jones managing director Phillip Jones said: "We are delighted to be associated with the project and hope the roundabout enhancement scheme will bring much pleasure to many people."
