GRATEFUL parents Deborah and George Hammond are well on their way to their fund-raising target for hospitals which saved their son's life.

Six-year-old Adam Hammond, from Congleton, has made a full recovery from the potentially killer disease meningococcal septicaemia.

Adam, from Dale Crescent, was struck down in January, and rushed into Macclesfield Hospital.

He was transferred to the paediatric intensive care unit at the North Staffordshire Hospital, where he spent four days being treated with antibiotics.

Six months on Adam's parents decided to raise money for the ICU at North Staffs and the childrens ward at Macclesfield as a thank you to the staff.

They set themselves a target of £1,000, and have already raised £750 through a series of events organised by Deborah.

''We felt we wanted to give the hospitals something back for everything they have done for us,'' she said.

Mr Hammond, Adam and his nine-year-old brother Daniel took part in a sponsored swim at Biddulph Leisure Centre, along with family friend James Higgins and Adam's uncle and cousins.

A bingo night at Bromley Farm Community Centre and charity night at Congleton Cricket Club boosted the total, along with a raffle and non-uniform day at Daven Primary School, Congleton.
