A PROPOSED new lay-by in Cronton Road has come to a standstill after villagers this week branded it a "deathtrap".

Residents say they were shocked to discover a hedgerow was soon to be ripped out in Cronton Road.

Said Tom Thornett, of Cronton Road, who is leading a campaign to fight the plans: "This makes a busy road a potential deathtrap.

"We are concerned that this will greatly increase the chances of pedestrians being killed or injured as it widens the road at the two main crossing points.

"It won't solve the parking problems in the village. It will further spoil what little rural heritage remains."

A spokesman for Knowsley Council said: "Consultation is currently taking place following further concerns from residents. While that consultation period contiues, the scheme is on hold."
