LAST minute touches are being made to a centre which looks set to become the hub of community life in Longford.

Residents have turned painters and decorators to revamp former shop premises and flats at the corner of Sandy Lane and Northway.

Home to a food co-operative, job shop, conference and training rooms, co-ordinators behind the Longford Residents' Association one stop shop are staging trial runs now so the venture will run smoothly when it officially opens.

The site will also house the Poplars Credit Union and the association is presently in discussions with Warrington Collegiate Institute about staging community classes there.

Residents' association spokesman Steve Murphy and neighbourhood worker Catherine Wright said they hoped the base would provide accommodation for various groups and associations in the area.
