A 56-year-old man was knocked down and killed by a train at Winwick, transport police have confirmed.
Investigations are still continuing into the death of Ernest Dickinson, as a result of the incident near Watery Lane in the early hours of Monday morning.
But the death, which occurred when Mr Dickinson was struck by a light locomotive between Warrington Bank Quay and Newton-le-Willows stations, is not thought to be suspicious.
Police and paramedics attended the scene and an inquest on the deceased, from Pear Tree House, King Street, Knutsford, was opened and adjourned until a date to be fixed by the coroner's office.
