WINSFORD Cricket Club Juniors are celebrating their best ever week with their first appearance in a major final.

The Under-15s won their semi-final of the Meller Braggins Knockout Cup against Bredbury by nine wickets on Thursday night.

Bredbury were dismissed for 96-6 in their 20 overs, and Winsford took just 16 overs to reach their target, the innings ending on 99-1.

Throughout the cricket club, Under-15s skipper Richard Evers emerged as the hero of the week.

He scored an unbeaten 41 in the semi-final to guide his side to victory - but two days later he proved he could take on the men as well.

Playing in the Winsford second team, he made his first half-century at senior level.

His 61 runs didn'to prove to be match-winning, however, as fellow batsmen let him down in their victory charge at Mere, falling short by just one run!

Evers is showing the potential to be a star of the future and has also won honours at county level.

His Winsford junior team will take on Lindow in the Under-15s Meller Braggins Cup final.

They have home advantage for the match, which will be played at Knights Grange this Friday night, July 23, starting at 6.30pm.

Winsford CC chairman Jen Brodie is thrilled with the youngsters' unique achievements.

She said: "It's the first time a side has got this far so it's is a very big thing for the club.

"I've watched these boys come through from the age of nine and I'm very proud of them."

At the weekend, both Winsford's first and second teams suffered defeats against their opponents from Mere. Reports of the matches appear on page 78.
