BROMLEY Farm Community Centre caretaker George Hammond has hit back at claims that the centre is 'filthy'.

The claims came from members of the Stephenson Day Centre, a group of physically disabled people who use the centre in Congleton on Thursdays.

The group alleged there was dirt on floors, skirting boards, ledges, windows, toilets and the kitchen, and sent a letter of complaint to Bromley Farm Community Group.

Mr Hammond is a member of the community group, and his wife. Deborah, the secretary of the group, said her husband was 'absolutely devastated' by the criticisms from the day centre members.

"The everyday cleaning at the centre is up to standard, and the criticisms are unjustified," she said.

"George does the caretaking on a voluntary basis, and feels like chucking it in."

Margaret Heap, the chairperson of the disabled group, said all of her members agreed to send the letter of complaint.

"We felt something had to be done because the centre is absolutely filthy," she said.

"If there is no improvement we could possibly find somewhere else to go."

The cleaning issue and future of the centre, which is used only three times a week, is due to be discussed next Monday at a community group committee meeting.
