The annual Pavilions Cup Competition

THE annual Pavilions Cup sponsored by Bass NW has kicked off and last year's winners Old Transporter got off to a comfortable start beating a very young Union Tavern side 5-1.

Goal scorers for Transporter were Gary Coady, Lee Daley, T Lunt who was also voted mom, Gary Tyrell and Mike Wheelhouse.

Pavilions from the West Cheshire League had an easy win over Travellers Rest, 7-0, D Butler mom (3), J Randles (2), A Hill, E Droughton.

A very much improved Burma Star will be challenging for the cup this year and they had a very impressive win over Runcorn Albion 6-0, M Steggles mom (3), S Storey (2), I Rockcliffe.

But the biggest shock was the defeat of the favourites and the biggest club in the competition Mond Rangers by going down 2-1 to newly formed Union Tavern managed by Arthur Hampson.

The young Union side fully deserved their win, goals scored by S Dundon and D Lunt.

A late consolation goal from Mond in the 88th minute was scored by Stuart Hide.

The West Cheshire side will have to improve 100 per cent when they play their next game against Transporter on Tuesday, kick-off 6.45pm.

Old Transporter won their second game of the week to go clear at the top of Group A with a 2-1 win over South Liverpool, Gary Coady and Karl Thomas scored for Tranny with J Rowan replying for South.

Burma Star shot to the top of Group B with an 11-0 win over Travellers Rest on Sunday morning, Kevin Patterson, Andy Clifton, Mark Steggles, Gary Jacques and a quartet from David Whitfield left a dispondent Travellers Rest bottom without a goal scored.

All the matches have been well attended with Burma Star attracting the most support.

With fitness levels increasing with each game the play-off for first, second, third and fourth places on Wednesday, July 28 and August 2 should be more evenly contested.

"With a prize for the first to the last place team, there is still all to play for as prize money increases the higher each team finishes" said competition spokesman Roy Roberts.
