AN elderly resident who has campaigned for traffic calming measures on his road is fuming after waiting more than a month to meet with council chiefs.

Ernie Fraley, of Gainsborough Road, has been campaigning for measures to stop speeders who he claims are travelling in excess of 60 mph along the residential street.

Plans to introduce traffic calming on Gainsborough Road went before the borough council on June 1, but they were deferred after the council decided there were other areas which need more urgent attention.

Unhappy with the decision, Mr Fraley has attempted to make an appointment to raise his concerns with council chiefs, but he claims they are dragging their feet.

Mr Fraley, chairman of the Wilderspool Residents' Association, said: "I am totally dissatisfied with the way the council has treated us and I have tried on three occasions to arrange a meeting with the chief executive.

"The first two times I was passed on to someone else and the third time I was told I would have to put my request in writing and await an appointment.

"I did this on June 18, and I'm still waiting for an appointment five weeks on."

Warrington Borough Council's chief executive Steven Broomhead said: "I sent Mr Fraley a letter on June 23 to inform him that his correspondance was receiving attention.

"I am aware of the concerns about Gainsborough Road and I am keen to meet with Mr Fraley and listen to his views.

"However, there is a proper procedure to follow and I need to be properly briefed of the situation before I can do this."

Mr Broomhead added: "I will make arrangements and try to see Mr Fraley before the end of next week."
