ARRIVA, which runs bus operations in Warrington and other areas of the north west, has bought a Spanish bus company for £15m.

Ideal Auto is a family owned, inter-urban bus operator employing 260 people in Galicia, northern Spain.

Said Arriva's chief executive Bob Davies: "Spain is the fifth largest bus market in Europe, worth around £2 billion a year, with a recent history of healthy growth. We seek to add further operations to our acquisition, building a strong foundation for future growth in Spain."

The acquisition follows Arriva's launch of a joint venture with Dutch Rail to provide integrated bus and rail services in the north of Holland, and its acquisiton of Bus Danmark to become the largest bus operator in the Danish market.

Arriva now employs more than 6,000 people in mainland Europe with operations in Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Spain.
