WARRINGTON Anglers' Association member Vic Bates reports that the River Dove, despite two families of resident mink, is still producing dace, small chub, roach and gudgeon.

A late report from two weeks ago highlights a chub narrowly under 6lbs taken on legered meat.

The Mersey is slowly improving with Dick Wernham catching mixed bags of roach, dace, chub, and gudgeon on most visits.

Jim Shaw had a 5lbs net of roach, dace, and chub in a short evening session. He caught fish on both leger and pole tactics and despite fishing maggot the good news is that he was not pestered by sticklebacks.

Most members are still holding back from wetting a line on what is, after decades of pollution, a fishery.

Barry Thomas had a cracking barbel brace from the River Severn at Loton Park, weighing in like peas in a pod at 7lbs apiece. He also had six smaller fish averaging 4lbs which all fell to legered meat. If you really fancy mauling with large barbel the Severn at Bicton is also worth a trip.

It's literally a roach every cast at tiny Ackers Pit and I have no doubt our junior members will cash in on the action as most schools start their summer break this week. A few bream on bread or corn.

Dare I mention again the fabulous tench sport at the small lake at Sandiway. Two members were so impressed after an evening session last Friday that they returned at first light the next day.

Tactics for these tench are simple - fish at 7 metres and put in 6 large 'jaffas' of any groundbait laced with casters and sweetcorn. Keep small balls with casters going in regularly as the fish move in on the feed.

I had a wander around the large lake and was pleased to see several large shoals of what looked like roach around 4 to 5inches.

Tench are also on the menu at Rixton Claypits. Member Ian Wells fished corn in a hole in the weed to net 30 fish for an estimated catch of 50lbs. He lost several larger specimens in the weed. Some decent roach also reported.

A brace of bream at a massive 8lbs each fell to Chris Glover who although legering boilies for carp was not too displeased with his catch. Small carp now starting to feed.

The Bridgewater Canal is really on form with most pleasure catches featuring bream or small carp.

Roach to hempseed on the Trent and Mersey Canal which should also work elsewhere at this time of the year.

HQ Parker Street is open as usual tonight, Friday, for subscriptions, new members, or simply call in for a chat and to catch up on the news. I can be contacted with your queries and catch reports on 01928 716238, or fax 01928 713898.
