ATHLETICS chiefs are proposing to create a 'super squad' in a bid to keep more young females at the county's clubs.

The CCAA, Cheshire County Athletics Association, in co-operation with the county's club's is desperate to stem the annual flow of its junior stars to the north west's big clubs.

It is working with clubs - including Halton and Frodsham - to create two new teams at under-20 and under-17 levels to compete in the National Junior League.

It's hoped that a chance to compete at a higher level will stop many of Cheshire's female stars from moving to giants such as Sale Harriers, Liverpool or Trafford as well as building a successful county team.

The CCAA also wants to stop girls giving up the sport after finishing at junior level.

Similar schemes have been adopted by clubs in Hull and Oxford with moderate success and some see it as the only way of hanging onto our home-grown stars.

Eddie Gore, a CCAA committee member, is currently working on proposals to launch the teams next season.
