AT a time when the people of Northwich are being asked to take a pride in the presentation of their town, I was surprised to witness the destruction inflicted by member of St Luke's Church, Winnington, in the gardens that surrounded their own church.

On Saturday morning they set to with chainsaws and began cutting down the mature laurel bushes and trees that surround the church.

No amount of pleading from the local residents and a councillor could prevent members of the congregation from butchering five lovely trees that shaded the church from the main road.

Eventually they were prevented from cutting down the remaining fully grown trees through the invention of the Archdeacon.

When I asked the church members why they were laying waste to their own church grounds, I was even more shocked to hear them explain that it was to prevent vandalism to the church.
