ROWER Matthew Langridge is aiming for nothing short of gold against Europe's best this weekend.

The Northwich Rowing Club member is hoping to land two gold medals at the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Cork over the weekend.

Matthew, 16, of London Road, won against stiff competition on Saturday in the Anglo-French tournament at Henley.

His single sculls victory was one of the English team's highlights as the mixed squad managed only three wins in 14 races.

Now he's getting fully focused for one of the biggest events of his rowing career so far.

"It went well at the weekend and now I'm getting ready for Cork," said Matthew.

"I'm really looking forward to it and I'm aiming for two golds.

"The competition is going to be extremely tough and there's no one nation that you can pick out as being strong in the single sculls.

"The eventually winner can come from anywhere so it's hard to predict.

"I'll just try and give it my best shot."

Matthew will be the north west's only representative in the European Junior Championships, with the majority of the squad rowing with clubs based in the south east.

Northwich Rowing Club's Senior Three women had a good day at Bewdley regatta last weekend.

The coxed four team of Carolyn MacRitchie, Anna Booth, Davina Scott, Lynne Poole and cox Ruth Port won their event with impressive displays in the final and the heats.
