Widnes Golf Club

JOHN PRICE won the club championship at Widnes for the fourth time on Saturday when he posted gross scores of 71 and 72 for a splendid aggregate of 143 which was only five over par.

It gave the six-handicapper a resounding three shot triumph over runner-up Peter Blatherwich (74+72) with Adrian Smith a further five shots adrift in third.

Juniors Gareth Roberts and Ian Ratcliffe took the consolation prizes for the best morning and afternoon scores - both 72s - while the prize for the best net score went to Bill Swindley for his two 68s.

George Cox recorded the best morning net, a tremendous 76-12=64 while Kieron Murphy was best in the afternoon with 79-11=68.

The Thwaites Open, a fairball betterball stableford competition took place on Sunday and featured a magnificent combined knock by two veteran members Alan Potter and Steve Roberts who stunned a poached field of competitors by breaking through the 50 point barrier.

That almost unbeatable score was pushed by three pairings who recorded 48 points, the runners-up prize going on countback to John McNally and Derek Olsen.

Peter Wilkinson and Reg Bowden took third with a back nine of 25 one better than Tony Karalius and Neil Cathcart.

Preceding those two major home events was the Widnes 'away day' at Upton-by-Chester on Friday when 56 of the club's members took part in a reciprocal arrangement with their Upton counterparts.

Again scoring was excellent with Ken Shepherd and Denis Hunt coming out on top with 47 points, one better than Owen Mahon and Ken Hill.

Third, a further point away, were Joe Shone and Tony Spencer.
