THE man who starred on the opposite wing to Brian Bevan in Warrington Rugby League Club's Championship-winning 1954/55 season died at a St. Helens nursing home on Monday.
Stan McCormick's funeral will take place today, Friday, at 3pm at St. Paul's Church in Blackbrook, St. Helens. He had been poorly for 12 months.
The England and Great Britain international scored 17 tries in 47 appearances from the left wing berth plus one turn out in the centres.
Stan was renowned for his electric speed, fine side step and for being a crowd pleaser with his entertaining style.
He joined Wire from St. Helens in time to win the famous 1954 Challenge Cup final, playing in both the Wembley draw with Halifax and the Odsal replay before a then world record crowd of more than 102,000 supporters. He also won a Lancashire League medal and the Championship with Wire in that amazing season.
Stan coached clubs including St. Helens and Salford when his playing days were over.
