TOWN centre motoring looks set to be thrown into turmoil with the announcement of major works at Bridge Foot.

Engineers say that an operation to replace a gas main in the area - which is seen as vital in ensuring free traffic flow through most major roads in Warrington - should only last around four or five days.

The bridge area will be shut from Warrington Bridge to Arpley Road throughout the duration of the mains upgrade.

But there is the prospect that the works, scheduled to begin on August 13, could last up to three weeks.

Gas giants Transco, who will be carrying out the works, say that the closure will allow their workmen to carry out the necessary roadworks in safety.

And diversions for town centre workers have been established along a number of key routes.

But a Town Hall spokesman admitted: "As a result of the closures, some delays to traffic flow are expected and motorists are advised to use an alternative route."

Other routes taking the strain during August include the A49 Mersey Street, Fennel Street, Brick Street, Crosfield Street, Wilson Patten Street and Parker Street.

Drivers are also being advised to take the A57 Midland Way, which bypasses the town centre, particularly for those vehicles travelling from Padgate, Woolston and Orford to destinations in Great Sankey and Penketh.
